Berqaber (Armenian: Բերքաբեր) is an old and small bordering village in the Tavush province of Armenia. The village lies right next to Joghaz Water Reservoir, shared by both Armenia and Azerbaijan. Since the 1990s, the Joghas reservoir, which once supplied water to the villages, has been in a conflict zone. Located just inside Armenia, its proximity to the frontier with Azerbaijan means locals who try to approach it come under fire from the other side.
With a population of 450, Berqaber’s distance from the capital of Yerevan is 152 kilometers. The village has one school (1-12 grade) with 55 students and one kindergarten with 25 children.
The villager’s main source of income is cattle-breeding, field cultivation, horticulture, vegetable growing, and tobacco. After years of not having a kindergarten, the community finally renovated and fully furnished the kindergarten in 2019. In 2020, the community requested a playground for its 25 kindergarteners, and FCN was happy to deliver, making a safe place for children to play outdoors.
