Kamo (Armenian: Կամո) is a village in the Shirak Province of Armenia. The village was named after Kamo, the nom de guerre of Simon Ter-Petrossian (1882-1922). With a population of 1474 and 320 households; the village is 148km from Yerevan. The resident’s main source of income is Farming and livestock cultivation. The village has one school (1-12 grade) with 183 students and 18 preschoolers. The village has not had a kindergarten since the Spitak earthquake, over 30 years ago. In 2019 the community started the construction of the kindergarten, with plans to complete the project in February of 2020. With all the construction expenses, the community has no funds to furnish the kindergarten, to open its doors to 26 kindergarteners. The community leader believes that once the kindergarten is in operation, and since the neighboring villages do not have a kindergarten, there will be the need to expand the kindergarten to incorporate the neighboring communities’ children. The kindergarten requested 26 beds with bedding and furniture (closets, tables, chairs, and shelves), a nurse’s room furniture, and a playground, which FCN was happy to provide. In addition to providing the opportunity for 26 children to attend kindergarten (and hopefully more in the future), this project will generate 5-6 new employment opportunities for the community.
